Gallery

ABOUT CASTLEMAINE

Castlemaine is one of the most renowned arts and culture communities in regional Victoria.

The art deco-style public gallery was founded in 1913; its crypt-like architecture gestures to the mania for Ancient Egypt that gained Western culture at the time. The permanent collection of this small but mighty gallery is complemented by temporary exhibitions and a strong community of living local artists.

ABOUT TEMPERANCE HOUSE

Originally built as The Albion Hotel, the heritage accommodation has had many incarnations.

A boarding house at one point and after that, a sort of retail store housing retail outlets of bygone trades such as a blacksmith, a bootmaker and a carpenter. It was once a brothel; word is that a tunnel ran underground connecting the nearby Theatre Royal and the hotel to ferry “working women”.

It was a meeting place and shelter for the Temperance Society in prohibition times, and returned late last century to a boutique hotel.

Many renovations and restorations over the years have resulted in a gloriously layered but understated accommodation house in which to relax and enjoy a small patch of Central Victoria. Right in the centre of the Goldfields region, Temperance House combines an air of rural history with a modern country getaway.
